Broadway South lands Aussie producer’s project

An Australian theater producer is planning a Broadway South debut for his new musical, “Angels.”

Malcolm Cheong said he wants “Angels” to be the first feature to take advantage of Louisiana’s theater production incentives.

“The benefits of producing ‘Angels’ in Louisiana are pretty clear. The hard part is securing theaters in New Orleans,” said Cheong, who brought his show to the city this month for an invitation-only preview at Le Chat Noir. The production, which will cost an estimated $14 million, has raised $2.8 million or 20 percent of its funding, Cheong said.

“‘Angels’ is a story of hope, courage and redemption, and New Orleans is a perfect fit for it,” said Cheong, who will work with New Orleans native Frank Monteleone on the show.

Letters to the Times-Picayune Editor Gets Response

If you weren't aware there has been somewhat of an editorial war going on in the letter to the editor section of the Times-Picayune. It all started when a former manager of the Saenger Theater initially wrote a letter to the editor in response to the "two down two to go" article, which was in the business section of the Times-Picayune recently. Posted for your review is the original letter and the responses from Arnold, the New Orleans DDD, and Roger Wilson himself.

We post this exchange because Broadway South welcomes any and all examination. Furthermore, Broadway South welcomes any and all competition. The more the merrier we say. As long as you are taking action and not just talking about recovery.

Broadway West? WSJ article of interest

Please see the attached link to today’s Wall Street Journal, “Broadway West?” I think the fact that this project, although minimally underway without any of the benefits we enjoy here in Louisiana (BWS legislation, Historic and New market tax credits), should inspire us all to realize that we are not alone in our thinking and we should proceed forthwith to begin this project as soon as possible. With L.A.’s prosperity, income and size aside, this proves to me, once more, that culture is the economic development engine for urban environments seeking to reinvent themselves. I take encouragement from this article though I wish it had been about us and hope that you do the same. I think without the benefits that we have in Louisiana the likelihood of these LA theaters coming back online are dubious at best and thus we should not feel threatened but inspired.

Article begins by saying:

Tinseltown Eyes Theatrical Revival

Los Angeles

Along Broadway in downtown Los Angeles, the Tower Theater helped usher in the era of "talking pictures" in 1927, and the Los Angeles Theatre hosted the 1931 premiere of Charlie Chaplin's classic film "City Lights." Albert Einstein accompanied the star to the gala, while Great Depression victims stood in line for bread across the street.

Media Mention: Theater tax incentives enacted

Construction, debuts qualify for credits
Friday, July 20, 207
By Bill Barrow

BATON ROUGE -- The so-called Broadway South bill, touted by supporters as a major incentive to renovate New Orleans' storm-damaged theaters and draw tourists, was signed into law Thursday by Gov. Kathleen Blanco.

Senate Bill 218 by Sen. Edwin Murray, D-New Orleans, provides state income tax credits to investors in theater construction and to offset the costs of producing musicals, plays, music concerts and a variety of stage shows in Louisiana, provided those shows are debut performances.

"The Broadway South legislation is going to spell the revitalization of New Orleans," said Roger Wilson, president of Broadway South, a firm under contract with the city to promote the initiative. "I believe in the next six months you will begin to see signs of rebuilding, not just the theaters but the buildings around them. The lights will soon be on year-round on Canal Street."

Media Mention: Setting the Stage

Broadway South incentives envisioned as ‘tipping point’ for downtown revival
by Richard A. Webster
06/25/2007

Roger Wilson has it all planned out.

On the same day Gov. Kathleen Babineaux Blanco signs Wilson’s Broadway South initiative into law, he will run a full-page ad in Daily Variety.

“It will read,” he says, moving a hand across the invisible headline stretched out before him, “‘The greatest alignment of incentives for your performance art production has just been ushered in by the state of Louisiana.’”

Wilson, a consultant for the city and entertainment industry veteran of 30 years, sees Broadway South as a clarion call, heralding the arrival of Louisiana as a major player in the world of performing arts. And it is close to becoming a reality.

Two weeks ago the Louisiana Senate passed the bill, 31 to 5, and last Tuesday the House Ways and Means Committee approved the measure moving it to the House floor.
